Baylor prof. goes all gee-I-don't-know on assisted suicide

The meltdown of Christian stances in the moral fields is happening with head-spinning speed. This post is from a professor at Baylor University. God have mercy. Looks like we need to include assisted suicide in our statements and our witch hunts. (See previous entry.) Gotta love the reference to "enlightened Christians" who think suicide isn't sinful unless done for "purely selfish reasons." Condescend much, Prof. Olson?

What a terrible writer.

Sic Frank Beckwith on him.

Yes, I consider Olson pretty unequivocal. I've become pretty much immune to the attempt to paint me (or anyone) as uncharitable who takes such things as they obviously are intended. Unfortunately, too many philosophers are wont to overparse in an attempt to be charitable. *That* response to Olson's post would be to say, "Now, now, he says he is not taking a position, so it is wrong of you to take him to be supportive." Then again, he *expressly states* that "enlightened Christians" don't consider suicide itself to be a sin unless done for purely selfish reasons, and that in itself is entirely unequivocal. So the _only_ thing he is "not taking a position on" (wink wink) is physician-assisted suicide! And if suicide itself is not wrong if done unselfishly, then why not support PAS?

So, yes, the "let's have a debate" stuff is very transparent.

Much like the outright refusal of the evangelical church (well known for their music) Hillsong this past week to state whether homosexual practice is immoral. They are, says their pastor, on a "journey" on that issue. Again, this is scarcely unclear. I was just reading yesterday the passage about denying Christ before men...
